1 | Pile Gate Entrance to Old Town

The Pile Gate entrance to the Old Town has been used a number of times in Seasons 2 and 3, most notably in Season 2, Episode 6 ‘The Old Gods and the New’. King Joffrey returns to Red Keep after Marcella is sent away to Dorne and he gets attacked by angry mobs gathered in the entrance as he screams ‘Kill him, kill them all’.

The entrance also features in Season 3, Episode 10 ‘Mhysa’ when Jamie Lannister returns to King’s Landing.

2 | Pile Harbour: Bokar Fortress and Fort Lovrijenac

The setting for King’s Landing Harbour is visible from Pile Harbour which is just outside the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik close to Pile Gate. The small fishing harbour is set between Bokar Fortress on the left and Fort Lovrijenac on the right.

Another familiar scene from Season 2, Episode 6 ‘The Old Gods and the New’, it represents the entrance and beaches of King’s Landing and is where the Lannisters say goodbye to Princess Myrcella. The location makes a return in Season 6, Episode 1 ‘The Red Woman’ when Cersei awaits Myrcella’s return.

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik

For the best experience in Dubrovnik, we recommend staying in Dubrovnik Old Town. Staying close to all the sights will allow you to avoid the busy daytime crowds that pack into the city.

It’s advisable to book the hotels well in advance as limited rooms mean the Old Town hotels book up months ahead during the summer season.

  • Dominus Little Palace – We stayed in this beautiful boutique hotel located 5 minutes walk from the Pile Gate entrance to the Old Town. All sights are 5-10 minutes from the hotel and the view from our room was one of the best in the entire Old Town  – check prices now!
  • Hotel Neptun  – We also stayed in the gorgeous resort Hotel Neptun. Located 10 minutes drive from the Old Town. This stunning hotel is located right on the sea with beautiful restaurants, bars and private swimming access to the sea. We loved the breakfast terrace overlooking the sea and our balcony overlooking the sea was amazing at sunset– check prices now!

3 | Dubrovnik West Pier

The nearby pier on Dubrovnik West Harbour is Blackwater Bay, the stone dock where Sansa and Shae are watching the ships in Season 3, Episode 1 ‘Valar Dohaeris’ when Littlefinger arrives to talk to Sansa and offer her a way out.

It also appears in a deleted scene from Season 3 where Tywin Lannister and Pycelle are fishing on the dock.

4 | Dubrovnik West Harbour

The curious doors in the West Harbour double as Blackwater Bay and this is where the gold cloaks were ordered to murder all of King Robert Baratheon’s bastard children in one of the most iconic scenes from Season 2.

5 | Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac (also known as the St Lawrence Fortress) is a stunning fortress located outside the western wall of the Old city of Dubrovnik and is instantly recognisable as the Red Keep in King’s Landing. The Fort makes frequent appearances in Season 2 and Season 3 of Game of Thrones.

It is the setting for King Joffrey’s naming ceremony in the premier of Season 2 ‘The North Remembers’ where a tournament is held to celebrate.

Later in the episode, the Red Keep is where Cersei confronts Littlefinger and he tells her ‘knowledge is power’ as she fires back with ‘power is power’. It’s also the destination of King Joffrey after he is attacked at Pile Gate and where Tyrion slaps him across the face.

Fort Lovrijenac also makes an appearance in Season 3 Episode 1 ‘Valar Dohaeris’ when Bronn tells Tyrion he should double his pay now he is knighted and in Season 3 Episode 5 ‘Kissed by Fire’. when Cersei asks Littlefinger to help in removing the Tyrells from King’s Landing.

6 | Gradac Park

Gradac Park, located next to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, made an appearance in Season 4 Episode 2 ‘The Lion and the Rose’ where it was the scene of the Purple Wedding feast where King Joffrey met his demise by poisoning during the wedding feast.

The Park also featured in Episode 3 ‘Breaker of the Chains’ in the same season when Sansa flees from King’s Landing. The park is a short walk from Fort Lovrijenac and well worth it or the views of the old town.

7 | Fort Bokar

Fort Bokar, which forms part of the Dubrovnik City Walls, was used in many of the sea wall shots for King’s Landing. The best views of the fort are from Fort Lovrijenac or from the City Walls themselves as you walk along them.

It is the background to the scene in Season 2 Episode 8 ‘The Prince of Winterfell’ where Tyrion and Lord Varys discuss defense strategies for King’s Landing from the City Walls.

8 | The City Walls

Dubrovnik’s City walls have featured countless times in the series and are one of the city’s most popular and beautiful tourist attractions in their own right. One of the great fortification systems of the middle ages they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

One of the most memorable scenes set along the city was in the Season 3 premiere ‘Valar Dohaeris’ when Tyrion, Bronn, and Podrick walk along the walls as workers repair the damage from the Battle of Blackwater.

In Season 4, Episode 7 ‘Mockingbird’ they feature in the scene where the Mountain kills prisoners and again in Season 5, Episode 3 ‘High Sparrow’ where King Tommen Baratheon tells Cersei she should return to Casterly Rock.

The Walls feature again in Season 5, Episode 4 ‘The Sons of the Harpy’ when Lancel apprehends Loras Tyrell leading to his arrest and it’s from the Walls that we see the ship carrying Marcella’s body en route to King’s Landing in Season 6, Episode 1 ‘The Red Woman’.

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik tip: Tickets to walk the City Walls cost 150 Kuna each and we highly recommend doing it first thing in the morning at opening (usually 8am) as the crowds get crazy during busy periods. There are three entrances to the walls, the main entrance is from the Pile gate and the other entrances are located by the St Lucas Fortress and the St John’s Fortress.

9 | Minčeta tower

The imposing Minceta Tower is the highest point in Dubrovnik and has gorgeous views over the Old City. It featured as the House of the Undying in Qarth in Season 2 Episode 10 ‘Valar Morghulis’ when Daenerys Targaryen searches for the entrance in the walls while in pursuit of her stolen dragons.

10 | Ethnographic Museum

Once a granary, the 16th Century Ethnographic Museum now contains agriculture exhibits and folk costumes. For Game of Thrones it’s better known as Littlefinger’s brothel in King’s Landing.

It features in Season 4, Episode 1 ‘Two Swords’ where Tyrion meets Oberyn Martell who is in King’s Landing to seek vengeance for the death of his sister and her children.

11 | The Jesuit Staircase

The Jesuit Staircase doubles as the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing. Cersei’s infamous Walk of Shame in Season 5, Episode 10 ‘Mother’s Mercy’ stretches across four locations in the Old Town: the Jesuit Staircase, Od Margarite Street, St. Dominik street and Ploce gate but it is the Jesuit Stairs that are perhaps the most famous setting from where Cercei must start upon her walk of shame to return home.

Cafe’s and shops were shut down and hundreds of extras were drafted in to line the streets. The staircase also featured in Season 5, Episode 1 ‘The Wars to Come’ where crowds gathered to pay their respects to Tywin Lannister.

14 | St Dominic Street

The narrow streets of Dubrovnik were used in most of the market scenes in King’s Landing as well as those featuring the City Watch and the murder of the bastard children. It also featured in the Walk of Penance in Season 5, Episode 10 ‘Mother’s Mercy’.

Another notable appearance was Season 2, Episode 5 ‘the Ghost Of Harrenhal’ when Bronn and Tyrion hear the uproar against Cersei and King Joffrey, who is described as ‘fruit of the incest’.

15 | Dominican Monastery

The highlight of St Dominic Street is the Dominican Monastery and it was from the steps of the Monastery that the Season 2, Episode 5 ‘the Ghost Of Harrenhal’ protest speech against the Lannisters was delivered.

16 | Ploče Gate

The east entrance to the Old Town, Ploče Gate appeared in Season 2 and Season 5 of Game of Thrones. In Season 2, Episode 5, ‘The Ghost of Harrenhal’ it is where Tyrion and Lancel Lannister talk with Bronn in the background.

Cercsei entered the Red Keep at the Ploče Gate after her Walk of Shame in Season 5, Episode 10 ‘Mother’s Mercy’ and was greeted by Qyburn.

17 | Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere is a derelict hotel located just outside Dubrovnik which served as the location for the fight scene between Prince Oberyn the Mountain in the Season 4 finale ‘The Mountain and the Viper’.

The small amphitheater is instantly recognisable despite the addition of some paint by Split soccer fans.

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik: Access to the hotel is not allowed. However, there is a set of steps just to the right of the hotel driveway where you access the atrium. Follow the steps right to the bottom and you’ll come to the circular atrium.

18 | Lokrum island

A few hundred metres from the Dubrovnik mainland, the lush green Lokrum Island doubles as the city of Qarth. Once used as a quarantine area the island is now a popular day retreat for locals and tourists alike.

Lokrum Island appeared in Season 2, Episode 5 ‘The Ghost of Harrenhal’ when it was visited by Daenerys Targaryen as she socialises with the city’s finest. The scene is set in the cloister of the island’s former Benedictine monastery.

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik: It’s about 15 minutes by ferry from Dubrovnik to Lokrum Island.

19 | Trsteno Arboretum

A 30 minute drive from Dubrovnik the exotic gardens of Trsteno Arboretum overlook the Adriatic Sea and make frequent appearances in Seasons 3 and 4 of Game of Thrones as the King’s Landing gardens.

You’ll need to take a taxi or public transport to Trsteno Arboretum. If you prefer to take a tour check out this Dalmatia day tour which includes Trsteno Arboretum – check out the tour here!

The gardens first debuted in Season 3, Episode 2 ‘Dark Wings, Dark Words’ when Sansa meets with her grandmother, Lady Olenna Tyrell to advise on whether King Joffrey will be a good husband for Margaery.

It’s in Trsteno where Oberyn promises Cercei he will have a gift delivered to Myrcella in Season 4, Episode 5 ‘First of His Name’.

  1. Thank you for this web page – in August 2018, we visited Dubrovnik old town. We followed the trail above and it was a great way to see the old town without wandering aimlessly around. We spent a fab day exploring the GoT filming locations without forking out for the tours.

  2. Thank you for this. I shall use the route when we go in May. I am having second thoughts about walking the wall, as I have a fear of heights. I read that there are sections that are unsafe. Do you know if there is a way to avoid
    these sections ?

    • Hi Mel

I am not crazy about heights and I don’t remember any parts of the wall causing me concern. I wouldn’t worry too much, I don’t recall it bothering me at all.

    • We walked the walls last fall. We are old people (I’m 70, my husband is 80.) I am terrified of heights.

It was GREAT, no problem at all.

  3. Hello!
I’ve now saved this site for our trip in the end of July. We are staying right outside the Old Town, with three kids age 13, 11 and 5. I’m the only one in the family that have seen GoT, but I want to bring the whole family to see most of theese locations. Do you have any tips for us? What will it cost for a trip to Locrum Island, The City Walls and “Red Keep”?

  7. Thank you very much for the list of the locations, it was very helpful, we have visited ~ 80% of them this August.

For future visitors: if you buy ticket for the Walls, keep it until you visit Fort Lovrijenac, it is included in the price.

  8. Hi, I’ll be visiting dubrovnik around the last week of October. is it possible to cover all of these within a day?
also, which is the best mode of transport to cover all them? what should I do to avoid the crowd?

    • Hi Ruchit

The first 16 are all in a small area and can be easily visited in a day for sure. It’d be really rushed to visit the last 3 so you should maybe prioritise either Lokrum Island or Trestno Arboretum as they each take a little time.

  9. Final day in Dubrovnik and it has been great thanks to using your ‘plan’ to see all the GoT sites. We used the 3 day pass which covers most sites and most museums for the same price as just going around the city walls. Never taken so many pics!!! We’ll be watching GoT again with a new perspective of having been to Kings Landing! A warning for the elderly. There’s not many places to sit… So lace yourself. Avoid the main square for refreshments. The prices are a rip off.
